大気の化学組成

高度による大気の層構造

地球の大気は、高度が上がるにつれて温度や密度が変化するため、いくつかの層に区分されます。高度が高くなるほど空気は希薄になり、宇宙空間との明確な境界線は存在しませんが、物理的特性に基づいて以下のように分類されます。

対流圏 (Troposphere)

地表から平均高度約12kmまで(極地方で約9km、赤道付近で約17km)の領域です。大気中の水蒸気のほとんどがここに集中しているため、雲や雨などの気象現象の大部分はこの層で発生します。プロペラ機が飛行できる唯一の層であり、生物の呼吸や植物の光合成に必要な空気が豊富に存在します。

成層圏 (Stratosphere)

対流圏の上限(対流圏界面)から高度約50〜55kmまで広がっています。この層にはオゾン層(主に高度15〜35kmに分布)が存在し、太陽からの有害な紫外線を吸収しています。この吸収熱により、高度が上がるほど温度が上昇するのが特徴です。大気質量の99%は高度30km以下に存在しており、成層圏上部の気圧は海面上の約1000分の1まで低下します。

中間圏 (Mesosphere)

成層圏の上限から高度約80〜85kmまでを指します。高度とともに温度が再び低下し、中間圏界面付近では平均約−85℃という地球上で最も低い温度に達します。また、音波は周波数の2乗に比例して吸収されるため、地上からの可聴音はこの層まで届きません。

熱圏 (Thermosphere)

高度約80kmから500〜1000kmまで広がっています。太陽放射の影響を強く受け、高度とともに温度が上昇します。この層にはプラズマ密度が高い電離層(高度50〜600km)が重なっており、オーロラの発生や無線通信への影響に関わっています。国際宇宙ステーション(ISS)もこの熱圏(高度370〜460km)を周回しています。

外気圏 (Exosphere)

熱圏の最上部(外気圏底)から、太陽風や惑星間物質と混ざり合うまで続く最も外側の層です。非常に希薄であるため、一部の科学者はこれを大気ではなく惑星間空間の一部とみなしています。

大気の物理的特性と光学現象
