宇宙に浮かぶ天体は、互いの重力によって絶えず影響し合っています。特に、惑星とその衛星の間で起こる潮汐加速(Tidal Acceleration)という現象は、数百万年という長い時間をかけて、惑星の自転速度や衛星の軌道半径を劇的に変化させます。地球と月の関係は、このメカニズムを理解するための最も優れたモデルケースです。

簡単に言えば、潮汐加速とは、天体間の潮汐力によって衛星が徐々に外側の軌道へ押し出される現象を指します。これに伴い、親天体(地球など)の自転エネルギーが衛星へと転移するため、親天体の自転速度は低下します。これを潮汐ブレーキ(Tidal Braking)と呼びます。

地球・月系における観測と歴史的検証

過去の地球の回転速度は、化石や地層からも読み取ることができます。例えば、7,000万年前の白亜紀後期の軟体動物の殻の分析からは、当時の1年が372日であったことが分かっており、1日の長さは約23.5時間でした。また、6億2,000万年前には1日が約21.9時間であったと考えられています。

自転速度に影響を与えるその他の要因

地球の自転速度の変化は、潮汐ブレーキだけでは説明できません。実際には、氷河期の氷が溶けて地殻が跳ね上がる「ポスト氷河期リバウンド」という現象が起きています。これにより地球の形状がわずかに変化し、フィギュアスケーターが腕を縮めて回転を速めるように、自転速度をわずかに加速させる方向に働いています。

また、海洋の潮汐だけでなく、地球の地殻自体の柔軟な変形(フレックス)も潮汐加速に寄与していますが、その寄与度は熱散逸ベースで全体の約4%に過ぎません。

Frequently Asked Questions

月は永遠に地球から遠ざかり続けるのでしょうか?

理論上は、地球の自転周期が月の公転周期と一致するまで続きます。しかし、実際にはその前に太陽の放射エネルギーが増大し、約10億〜15億年後には地球の海が蒸発して潮汐摩擦が消失します。また、45億年後には太陽が赤色巨星となり、地球と月を飲み込む可能性が高いため、完全な潮汐ロックに至る前にシステムは消滅すると考えられています。

「1日が長くなる」とは具体的にどのくらいの速度ですか?

現在の観測では、100年ごとに約2ミリ秒ほど1日が長くなっています。この微小な差が蓄積するため、原子時計による正確な時間(国際原子時)と、地球の自転に基づく時間(世界時)のズレを補正するために「うるう秒」が導入されました。

潮汐加速で失われたエネルギーはどこへ行くのですか?
