地球の表面を包み込む大気は、重力によって保持された混合ガスの層であり、単なる「空気」以上の重要な役割を果たしています。宇宙空間との境界として機能するこの層は、有害な紫外線や隕石から地表を守る緩衝材となり、温室効果を通じて夜間の急激な温度低下を防ぎ、生命が生存可能な温暖な環境を維持しています。また、気流によって熱や水分を世界中に分散させることで、地球全体の気候を調節しています。

地球の大気組成は不変ではなく、太古の太陽星雲からのガス蓄積に始まり、火山活動や生命の進化(特に光合成を行う生物の出現)を経て、現在の形へと変化してきました。現代では、化石燃料の使用や森林破壊といった人間活動が、地球温暖化やオゾン層破壊などの環境変化を引き起こしています。

大気の層状構造

大気は高度が上がるにつれて密度が低くなり、温度変化や化学的特性に基づいていくつかの層に区分されます。

対流圏(Troposphere)

地表から平均高度約12kmまで(極地方で約9km、赤道付近で約17km)の領域です。水蒸気のほとんどがここに集中しているため、雲や雨などの気象現象の大部分はこの層で発生します。プロペラ機が飛行できる唯一の層であり、高度が上がるにつれて温度が低下するのが特徴です。

成層圏(Stratosphere)

対流圏の上限から高度約50〜55kmまで広がっています。ここにはオゾン層(主に高度15〜35km)が存在し、太陽からの有害な紫外線を吸収しています。この吸収熱により、高度が上がると温度が上昇する傾向にあります。ジェット機が飛行する高度であり、上空では飛行機雲が形成されることがあります。

中間圏(Mesosphere)

高度約50kmから80〜85kmまでの層です。高度とともに温度が再び低下し、中間圏界面(メソポーズ)付近では平均約−85℃という地球上で最も低い温度に達します。地上の音波は周波数の二乗に比例して吸収されるため、可聴音はこの層まで届きません。

熱圏(Thermosphere)

高度約80kmから500〜1,000kmまで及ぶ層です。太陽放射の影響を強く受け、温度が急上昇します。この層の一部(高度50〜600km)は電離層(イオン層)と呼ばれ、プラズマ密度が高いため、電波の伝搬に大きな影響を与えます。また、オーロラが発生する領域であり、国際宇宙ステーション(ISS)もこの高度(370〜460km)を周回しています。

外気圏(Exosphere)

熱圏の最上部(熱圏界面/エキソベース)から、太陽風や惑星間物質と混ざり合うまで続く最も外側の層です。ガスが極めて希薄であるため、一部の科学者はこれを大気ではなく惑星間空間の一部とみなしています。

物理的特性と光学現象
