食のメカニズム:日食と月食が起こる天文学的理由

夜空や昼間の太陽に起こる「食」という現象は、天文学的に非常にダイナミックな出来事です。簡単に言えば、ある天体が別の天体の影に入ったり、あるいは観測者と天体の間に別の物体が入り込んで視界を遮ったりすることで起こります。このような3つの天体が一直線に並ぶ状態を、専門用語でシジジー(Syzygy)と呼びます。

食の形態は、遮る天体の大きさや位置によって異なります。完全に隠れる場合は「掩蔽(えんぺい)」、一部だけが隠れる場合は「通過(トランジット)」と呼ばれます。また、小さな天体が大きな天体の背後に完全に隠れる現象は「深い食(deep eclipse)」と定義されます。

影の構造:本影・半影・反影

光を遮る物体が作る影には、濃淡によって異なる領域が存在します。中心にある最も暗い部分は本影(Umbra)と呼ばれ、ここに入った観測者は光源が完全に遮られた状態になります。その周囲にある、光源の一部だけが隠れる薄い影の領域を半影(Penumbra)、そして特定の条件下で光源が遮蔽物の外側にリング状に見える領域を反影(Antumbra)と呼びます。

地球のような大気を持つ天体が影を作る場合、光が屈折して本影の中にわずかに入り込みます。これが月食の際、月が完全に地球の影に入っても真っ黒にならず、赤銅色にぼんやりと光る理由です。

日食の仕組みと種類

日食は、太陽と地球の間に月が入り込むことで発生します。月が太陽を完全に覆い隠すと「皆既日食」となり、太陽の周囲に広がるコロナプロミネンス(紅炎)が観測できるようになります。

一方で、月の見かけの大きさが太陽より小さく、中心に黒い円が残り、周囲に光の輪が見える状態を「金環日食」と呼びます。また、太陽の一部だけが欠けて見えるのが「部分日食」です。これらが組み合わさった「ハイブリッド日食」という稀なケースも存在します。

皆既日食が見られる範囲は非常に限定的で、本影が通過する幅は最大でも250km程度です。この影は時速約1,700kmという猛スピードで東へ移動するため、完全な食を観測できる時間は最大でも7分31秒と非常に短時間です。

月食のメカニズム

月食は、地球が太陽と月の間に位置し、月が地球の影の中に入り込むことで起こります。地球の影(本影)は月よりもはるかに大きいため、月全体が影に飲み込まれることが可能です。

月食には、月が本影に完全に入る「皆既月食」、一部が入る「部分月食」、そして半影のみに入る「半影月食」の3種類があります。

なぜ毎月食が起きないのか

もし地球の公転面と月の公転面が完全に一致していれば、毎月の新月に日食が、満月に月食が起こるはずです。しかし、実際には月の軌道面が地球の軌道面に対して約5度傾いています。

As the Earth revolves around the Sun, approximate axial parallelism of the Moon's tilted orbital plane (inclined at five degrees to the Earth's orbital plane) results in the revolution of the lunar nodes relative to the Earth. This causes an eclipse season approximately every six months, in which a solar eclipse can occur at the new moon phase and a lunar eclipse can occur at the full moon phase.

このため、2つの面が交差する点(昇交点と降交点)が太陽方向を向いたときだけ、食が発生します。このタイミングを「食の季節」と呼び、およそ半年に一度訪れます。

宇宙における多様な「食」の事例

食の現象は地球周辺だけに限定されません。他の惑星系でも同様の出来事が起きています。例えば、火星では衛星のフォボスやダイモスが太陽を遮る通過現象が観測されています。

また、木星の衛星イオが木星の影に入ることで、木星の表面に黒い点として影が投影されることもあります。さらに、土星が太陽を遮る様子が探査機カッシーニによって捉えられた例もあります。

恒星の間でも食は起こります。2つの星が互いの周りを回る「食連星」では、手前の星が奥の星を遮るたびに、観測される光の強さが周期的に変化します。ペルセウス座のアルゴルがその代表例です。

歴史と記録

人類は古くから食を記録してきました。紀元前1223年の日食を記したシリアの粘土板や、中国の3,000年以上にわたる記録は、当時の年代測定や地球の自転速度の変化を研究する貴重な資料となっています。

日食と月食はなぜ同時に起きないのですか?

日食は「新月」のときに、月食は「満月」のときにのみ起こるため、天体の配置が正反対であり、同時に発生することはありません。

サロス周期とは何ですか?

日食や月食がほぼ同じ条件で繰り返される約18年11日の周期のことです。ただし、日数が整数ではないため、次に同じ周期の食が起こる場所は地球上の別の地域になります。

金環日食が起こるのはなぜですか?

月が地球から遠い位置(遠地点付近)にあるとき、見かけの大きさが太陽よりも小さくなるため、太陽を完全に覆いきれず、周囲に光の輪が残ります。

水星や金星で食は起こりますか?

水星と金星には衛星がないため、惑星表面で食が起こることはありません。ただし、地球から見てこれらの惑星が太陽の前を横切る「通過」現象は観測されます。

月食のときに月が赤くなるのはなぜですか?
