氷河とは、長年にわたって降り積もった雪が自重で圧縮され、氷という一種の岩石へと変化し、ゆっくりと流動する巨大な氷の塊です。雪の蓄積量(涵養)が、融解や蒸発による消失量(消耗)を上回ることで形成されます。重力の影響を受けて絶えず移動し続ける氷河は、その過程で地表を削り取り、独特の地形を作り出す地球上のダイナミックな自然現象です。

地球上の陸地面積の約10%を氷河が覆っており、特に南極やグリーンランドに広がる巨大な氷床にその99%が集中しています。氷河は地球最大の淡水貯蔵庫であり、氷床を含めると世界の淡水の約69%を保持しています。これにより、乾燥した地域や夏季において、植物や動物、そして人類にとって不可欠な水源としての役割を果たしています。

氷河の種類と分類

規模と形態による分類

氷河はその大きさや形状によって、大きく「山岳氷河」と「大陸氷河(氷床)」に分けられます。山岳氷河は山の斜面や谷に沿って形成され、谷を埋め尽くすものは谷氷河と呼ばれます。また、山頂や火山を覆う比較的小規模なものは氷帽氷原に分類されます(氷帽は面積5万km²未満と定義されます)。

一方で、面積が5万km²を超える巨大な氷の塊は氷床と呼ばれます。現在、地球上に存在する氷床は南極とグリーンランドの2か所のみです。これらの氷床がすべて融解した場合、世界の海面は70メートル以上上昇すると推定されています。また、氷床の一部が海に突き出した部分は棚氷と呼ばれ、高速で流動する部分は氷流として区別されます。

氷河は極地だけでなく、高山地帯であれば熱帯地方にも存在します。例えば、ペルーのケルカヤ氷帽やケニア山などの高地では、持続的な降雪があるため氷河が形成されます。

Kenya's glaciers have been retreating since the 19th century,[25] and the summit no longer receives enough persistent snowfall to sustain them.[26]

氷河の表面や縁辺部では、氷が脆く割れることでクレバスと呼ばれる深い亀裂が生じます。また、氷の流動速度が年1kmを超える地域では、大規模な「氷河地震」が発生することがあり、特にグリーンランドでは夏季にその頻度が高まる傾向にあります。

内部構造と底面プロセス

氷河の断面を見ると、底面付近では融解が進んでいるため透明度が高くなる傾向があります。また、氷河の底面では、氷が岩盤の上を滑る「底面滑走」や、氷自体が変形して流れる現象が同時に起きています。氷河の下には、氷の圧力で液状化した水が存在し、時にはボストーク湖のような巨大な氷底湖が形成されることもあります。

氷河が作り出す地形と地質学的影響

浸食作用:削り取る力

氷河が移動する際、底に取り込まれた岩石の破片がヤスリのような役割を果たし、基盤岩を研磨します。これを摩耗と呼び、岩盤に長い傷(氷河擦痕)や三日月形のくぼみ(チャッターマーク)を残します。また、氷が岩石をむしり取るプラッキングという作用により、鋭い山頂(ホーン)やU字型の谷が形成されます。

このような浸食の結果、氷河が消えた後には、切り立った崖を持つフィヨルドなどの劇的な景観が残されます。

堆積作用:運ぶ力

氷河は削り取った岩石や土砂を運び、それが堆積してモレーン(氷堆石)と呼ばれる堤のような地形を作ります。また、氷河の底に堆積した物質が流動によって流線型の丘となったものはドラムリンと呼ばれ、当時の氷河の移動方向を示す重要な手がかりとなります。

気候変動と氷河の未来

現代において、氷河は地球温暖化の最も顕著な影響を受けています。気温の上昇により氷が融解すると、地表の反射率(アルベド)が低下し、さらに太陽熱を吸収しやすくなるという正のフィードバックループが発生します。これにより、氷河の後退はさらに加速します。

また、巨大な氷床が消失すると、その重量から解放された地殻がゆっくりと上昇する地殻均衡反動という現象が起こります。氷河の変動は単なる景観の変化ではなく、海面水位の上昇や地質学的変動を通じて、地球全体の環境に深刻な影響を及ぼします。

氷河は陸上で雪が積もって形成され、自重で流動する「氷の岩石」です。一方、海氷は海水が凍結して表面に形成される薄い氷であり、陸上で形成される氷河とは根本的に成り立ちが異なります。

なぜ氷河は青く見えることがあるのですか?

氷河の氷は非常に高密度に圧縮されており、気泡がほとんど排除されています。このため、光が当たると赤い波長の光が吸収され、青い波長の光が散乱して戻ってくるため、深く鮮やかな青色に見えます。

氷河がなくなるとどのような影響がありますか?
