WCTUの誕生と草の根の闘い

WCTUの原点は、1873年から1874年にかけて全米で巻き起こった「反酒場キャンペーン」にあります。当時の女性たちは、酒場の外で祈りを捧げ、客に禁酒を訴えるという直接的な行動に出ました。この活動は激しい抵抗に遭うことも多く、例えばミネソタ州アノカでは、酒場店主夫妻から冷水を浴びせられたり、床にビールを撒かれて跪いて祈ることができない状況に追い込まれたりしたといいます。

こうした弾圧が逆に女性たちの結束を強め、1874年に全米規模の組織としてWCTUが結成されました。ミネソタ州では1875年から1877年にかけて、セントポールやミネアポリスなどで地域クラブが次々と組織され、州全体の運動へと拡大していきました。

組織の拡大と多角的な社会改革
