夜空を見上げていると、2つの明るい惑星や月が驚くほど近くに寄り添っている光景に出会うことがあります。天文学では、このような現象を合(コンジャンクション)と呼びます。これは、地球から見たときに2つの天体が同じ赤経、あるいは同じ黄道経度(太陽の通り道である黄道上の位置)にある状態を指します。

重要なのは、これが「見かけ上の現象」であるということです。空では隣り合っているように見えても、実際の宇宙空間では、これらの天体は互いに非常に遠く離れた位置にあります。観測者の視点から一直線上に並ぶため、接近したように見えるだけなのです。

また、天体同士の最小接近距離のことをアプルスと呼び、区別して表現されます。特に明るい惑星同士の合は、特別な機材がなくても肉眼で十分に楽しむことができる壮観なイベントです。

歴史に残る稀な惑星の集結

近年の事例と今後の展望

現代でも、魅力的な合の現象は続いています。2020年12月21日には、木星と土星が1623年以来の最小接近を記録する「大合」が起こりました。また、2024年8月15日にはおうし座で火星と木星の鮮やかな合が観測されています。

今後の注目イベントとしては、2025年に土星と海王星の三重合(短期間に3回合が起こる現象)が予定されています。そして、2040年9月9日には、5つの肉眼惑星と月が夜空に集結する予定で、これは西暦1186年以来の極めて稀な接近となります。
