19世紀に入るとイギリスの植民地支配(イギリス領インド帝国)下に置かれましたが、ムハンマド・イクバールの思想やムスリム連盟の活動により、ムスリムのための独立国家という概念が具体化しました。1947年8月14日、ついにイギリスから独立し、パキスタンとして誕生しました。
