コラート王立タイ空軍基地とキャンプ・フレンドシップの歴史

タイのナコンラチャシマ近郊に位置するコラート王立タイ空軍基地(Korat RTAFB)は、冷戦期、特にベトナム戦争においてアメリカ空軍の極めて重要な戦略拠点として機能しました。1955年に建設されたこの基地は、タイ空軍の所有でありながら、長年にわたり米軍の強力な運用能力を支え、東南アジアにおける航空作戦の中核を担いました。

ベトナム戦争期の展開と発展

初期の展開と「キャンプ・ナスティ」

1964年7月、米空軍の戦闘航空団をサポートするため、大規模な基地建設が始まりました。約500人の人員が投入され、同年10月までに主要施設が完成しましたが、初期の居住環境は非常に劣悪であったため、米陸軍の快適な施設である「キャンプ・フレンドシップ」とは対照的に、空軍エリアは「キャンプ・ナスティ(不快なキャンプ)」というあだ名で呼ばれていました。

F-105 サンダーチーフによる猛攻

1964年のトンキン湾事件を受け、日本(横田基地)からF-105Dが急遽展開し、作戦が開始されました。その後、第388戦術戦闘航空団(TFW)が結成され、F-105による北ベトナムへの攻撃が本格化します。特にタイグエン製鉄所への攻撃や、ハノイのポール・ドゥメール橋の破壊作戦などで中心的な役割を果たしました。

敵の地対空ミサイル(SAM)や対空砲火(AAA)を無力化するため、ワイルド・ウィーゼル(Wild Weasel)と呼ばれる特殊任務機(F-105F/G)が配備されました。彼らはレーダーを検知し、敵の防空網を制圧することで、後続の爆撃機を保護する危険な任務を遂行しました。

また、EB-66デストロイヤーによる通信妨害や、EC-121(カレッジ・アイ)による早期警戒・管制任務など、高度な電子戦能力がコラート基地に集約されていました。

機体構成の変遷と作戦の多様化

F-4 ファントムIIへの移行

1968年半ばから、基地の主力機はF-105から最新のF-4EファントムIIへと移行しました。これにより、多目的運用能力が向上し、空戦能力と攻撃能力の両立が図られました。

A-7D、F-111、AC-130の配備

1972年以降、精密攻撃が可能なA-7DコルセアIIや、高速低空侵入が可能なF-111A、そして強力な火力を誇るAC-130スペクターガンシップが次々と配備されました。これらの機体は、カンボジアでの最終作戦や、1975年のメイグエズ号事件などの緊急作戦にも投入されました。

キャンプ・フレンドシップ:米陸軍の巨大支援拠点

1970年の米軍撤退計画に伴い、この施設は段階的に閉鎖され、多くがタイ陸軍に引き継がれました。しかし、空軍は一部の施設を1976年の完全撤退まで利用し続けました。

撤退とタイ空軍への継承

1974年から1975年にかけて、米軍はタイからの段階的な撤退を開始しました。各航空団は米国本土やフィリピンのクラーク基地へと移転し、1976年初頭にコラート基地は完全にタイ空軍に返還されました。

返還後の基地には、F-5E/FタイガーIIやOV-10Cなどが配備され、その後2000年代には米国からF-16ファイティング・ファルコンが導入されるなど、現代的な防空拠点として進化を続けています。
